The Language of Persuasive Interviewers

The Language of Persuasive Interviewers It is common knowledge that you make your first impression prior to saying your first word. Regardless, sooner or later, you are going to have to open your mouth. When you do, it’s imperative to show empathy, speak from the heart, maintain composure and come across as confident, yet not arrogant. This is all part of speaking the language of persuasive interviewees. Individuals who learn this language are better compensated, given more prestigious titles and are respected more around the office after being hired. Similar to any other language, the gift of influential speech can be acquired via knowledge, focus, will power and practice. More specifically, persuasive interviewing involves three facets: learning how to establish rapport with an interviewer; integrating compelling verbiage; and avoiding patterns of speech that weaken perceived competency. Establishing Rapport Rapport (n) a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each others feelings or ideas and communicate well. For any interviewee, establishing rapport is crucial.   Without rapport, changing minds, cultivating new ideas and stirring action is nearly impossible. Prior to focusing on their agenda, persuasive interviewees capture the hiring manager’s attention via establishing that they have shared concerns or interests. One way to establish rapport is to focus in questions and talking points specifically to the interviewers point of view. For instance, when an HR representative vocalizes excitement about their company, it’s advantageous to openly share in that excitement, and to furthermore ask about what is most responsible for it. When you know what drives your interviewer, you can then communicate where such drivers also enthuse you. Integrating Compelling Verbiage Persuasive interviewees use descriptive, imaginative language that engages the mind of the hiring manager. However, they keep it simple. They don’t speak in extremely long, convoluted sentences and avoid using cliches. Additionally, persuasive interviewers utilize action verbs. Direct, active verbs add force, clarity and vigor to speech. So does utilizing an extensive vocabulary. Keep in mind, using intricate vocabulary does have potential pitfalls. With the wrong crowd fancy terminology may cause you to appear less welcoming and friendly. In other situations, excessive use of complex verbiage may backfire, as you risk coming across as pretentious or losing the audience’s attention. Avoiding Patterns of Speech That Lessen Persuasiveness Know what you’re going to say and practice saying it. Constant hesitations or use of phrases such as “kind of,” “a little bit,” or “sort of” will frequently lead an interviewer to question your competence and confidence. Qualifiers such as “I think” and “in my opinion” may also lessen credibility and perceived capability. As in any conversation, there is a place for well-considered pauses to ensure you are giving a thoughtful answer that reflects your history, beliefs, or interests as the situation dictates.   But there is a difference between a well-aimed pause, and constant dead air. In the End When you are talking to anyone, give them your sole and undivided attention. Do not let your attention wander or be diverted. In order to speak the language of the persuasive interview, know what you want out of the conversation and center your mind on that sole purpose.

5 Solo Travel Destinations For Women - Classy Career Girl

5 Solo Travel Destinations For Women For women who work full-time and also care for their kids, feeling stressed and overwhelmed is nothing new. There’s always a long list of responsibilities that await â€" from carpools, lunches and monitoring homework to meetings and everyday work tasks. Many women want to recharge with a bit of alone time, making a solo trip the perfect excuse to get away. For overworked women who want a break, here are five interesting destinations to visit to enjoy a much-needed escape: 5 Solo Female Travel Destination Ideas 1. Boston With a rich history and an extremely low crime rate, Boston is a great place for solo female travelers looking for an educational travel experience. It is one of the most interesting cities in the U.S. that regularly hosts a number of events that celebrate the past and offer the chance to learn about confrontations that lead to the American Revolution. Boston also offers plenty of places to explore while walking around, with exceptional seafood restaurants available right on the water. Exploring the location by food makes it easy to view the different neighborhoods, which include Back Bay, Beacon Hill, and the Italian North End. Tip: Although Boston is a very safe place to visit, its still important to avoid showing off your jewelry or expensive camera while sight-seeing to avoid theft. 2. Pacific Coast If you wish to experience the proverbial wind in your hair, consider taking a Pacific Coast road trip. Just hop into your car, fasten your seat belt and get ready to enjoy the unparalleled views of the ocean. The Pacific Coast has temperatures that settle around 70 degrees in each season of the year. The road trip offers a wide variety of places to visit and things to do, so it will require some extra planning. Opt for staying in budget-friendly hostels or on campgrounds during the trip to avoid splurging on five-star hotels that you may not be spending much time in. As you glide along the coast, consider stopping in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is a great place to explore the boardwalk and ride roller coasters whereas San Luis Obispo is the perfect place to take a tour of Hearst Castle or visit the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden. Tip: The highway is full of sharp curves and high cliffs without guardrails. Adjusting to road conditions may mean that you have to drive slower at times. This will not only keep you safe  but also allow you to take in the beautiful coastal scenery. [RELATED: The Beginners Guide to Using Airbnb] 3. Hawaii Give yourself the much-needed TLC that you deserve with the most romantic of all destinations â€" Hawaii. You don’t need to be on a honeymoon to enjoy all that the islands have to offer. In fact, as a solo traveler, you will have more time to embark on adventures such as kayaking on Kayak Wailua River or hiking through lush rainforests. For working moms who don’t have itchy feet, cities such as Honolulu provide all the benefits of civilization. Enjoy the local cuisine, relax in one of numerous bars or simply divide your time between sleeping and swimming. In Hawaii, you can explore the indigenous culture, tradition, and history. Arm yourself with the aloha spirit and do not forget to attend a luau. The time you spend in Hawaii will take you far away from your overworked mom everyday routine. Tip: Women who decide to travel alone to the island should avoid sharing too much of their personal information with others and also avoid non-tourist areas at night. 4. San Francisco There are people in this world who cannot stop moving. If you have relentless energy, this incredible city will quench your thirst for adventure. Take a ride on a cable car or visit Ghirardelli Square to see the sea lions sunbathing. In San Francisco, you can dine over dumplings at Yank Sing and have a picnic in Presidio Park. A night tour at Alcatraz Island is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a working mom. The city also welcomes visitors to take a bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge or do a bit of shopping at Haight-Ashbury. If you want to see where television shows and movies were filmed, stop at the Painted Ladies to view the iconic houses that are a staple in San Francisco. Tip: As a solo female traveler, remember to take safety precautions that include limiting your alcohol consumption and avoid accepting food or beverages from strangers. 5. Savannah A small-town feel of Savannah, Georgia, blends in perfectly with all the perks of a much bigger city. This historic place offers an abundance of natural beauty and rich culture for those who want to visit art galleries or explore dozens of attractions in a picturesque setting. The city of Savannah is known for its Southern hospitality and is a great place to dine at over 100 restaurants in the Historic District. Some of the activities that overworked moms will enjoy include viewing the stunning architecture at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist or getting a glimpse of the photo collection at Jepson Center for the Arts. Both quirky and sophisticated, Savannah will make a perfect weekend getaway for all types of working moms. From binge-reading intellectuals to classy fashionable girls, everyone will find places and activities in Savannah that suit their individual taste. Tip: The streets of Savannah are very safe during the day. However, you should be more cautious at night and avoid poorly lit areas along the Historic District. Overworked moms are in need of a vacation to escape the stresses of their everyday lives. A solo trip is a perfect opportunity for busy women to reenergize and enjoy new experiences. If you’re a working mother, the adventure of traveling alone will not only broaden your views but also give you a new found appreciation for your life. You’ll be able to see the places you’ve never seen before and spend some much needed time alone, while at the same time realizing that there really is no place like home.

How I Uncluttered My Work and Life

How I Uncluttered My Work and Life When you have a disorganized office and home, it can tell others around you that you are an ineffective worker. Not only that, but you probably feel ineffective when your office is a mess and its draining the energy you need to do your job well. Overall, a messy office can derail your career and your life. Its time to unclutter. We recently moved into a new apartment and since we work from home and have a 2-year old, its more important than ever to stay organized and uncluttered. If youve been following along, you know that over the last 6 months, we have been living a location independent lifestyle, and through that process, I realized that we really dont need much. My daughter and I dont need a ton of clothes and we dont need a ton of books sitting on a bookshelf. I also realized that I definitely dont need papers piling up in my bedroom/office (pics coming soon!) Heres what I am learning about uncluttering that I wish I would have known years ago. How I Uncluttered My Work and Life 1. Create a Peaceful Workspace You will be amazed how much more productive you will be if you enjoy where you work.  So right now I want you to look around at your workspace. Are you surrounded by junk? Do you absolutely love your office? Does it inspire you? Would you invite your friends to a meeting in your office? Does it energize you? If not, it’s time to make some improvements to your office. Think about what does inspire you and what do you love? How can you add some of that to your workspace? For me, this was as simple as getting some folders, frames, photos of my family and spending $25 at Target for some fun supplies. We all enjoy living in a home that is decorated according to our tastes and is a warm and welcoming environment. It makes us feel good to be in a space that we like and enjoy spending time in. It stands to reason that the same goes for the workplace â€" the nicer our working environment is, the more we’ll enjoy being there and the more productive we will be. On the other hand, if an office space feels bland and makeshift, we’re less likely to feel inspired or creative in our work. These days, with everyone working longer hours, the ambiance of an office environment becomes even more important. 2.  Comfort Matters Weve all sat on chairs that hurt, right? Especially, when you are sitting in the exact same chair for 8+ hours a day. Comfort matters. As much as I wanted those cute office chairs on Pinterest, I chose to stick with comfort instead. Also, equipment that is poorly designed can be a cause of headaches and health  issues â€" often affecting the lower back, neck and shoulders â€" as well as stress in the workplace. Besides causing pain and psychological distress,  a work environment that is uncomfortable can also be less productive. If an office is visually appealing, with well-designed and stylish furniture, it can make a huge difference to the ambiance. It’s also not just your chairs and desk you need to consider, the way your office reception and meeting rooms are furnished can affect how clients and suppliers think about your company. To improve first impressions of your company, for instance, you might choose to  buy Italian furniture  to add a sense of style to the  waiting area or reception, with a striking color scheme for the walls offset with some accent pieces of sculpture and art. It’s not just about having stylish furniture that’s ergonomically designed. even ‘Health, Wellbeing, and Productivity in Offices’ a report from the  World Green Building Council,  suggested that an office layout can have an impact on concentration, creativity, collaboration and confidentiality. 3. Make Rules For What You Bring Into Your Home One of my previous mentors, Ali Brown, stated that everything should be useful or beautiful in your office or home. You want to create a zen workplace. If your TV is blaring, the phone is ringing and a pile of bills is staring you in the face, you won’t be able to concentrate. Make your home a place where you love to be that is comfortable, beautiful and promotes your creativity. Buy yourself flowers.  Clean up and make room for new things. What reminds you of an old boss or old job, etc? Get rid of the stacks of things and things you are tolerating and reminding you of negative things in your life. Your surroundings are so important! Have a day to go through your home. Grab some garbage bags, get fun colored file folders, and redo your shelves and files. Get rid of everything you can and then add frames, or flowers or candles get in there. How can you make your environment more pleasant to work in? Do you need better music? A better smelling candle to inspire you? Is your back hurting on your chair? Do you need a new chair? Women are so sensitive to your environments. You want it beautiful to inspire you. It’s so important for us. Clean out stuff and change up photographs, frames. Look around and say “I love my home!” That is what I want you to get to. Go to Target and make it pretty. Treat it seriously. Take care of what you have if you want more. Also, inspire yourself with photos and encouraging pictures and quotes. I also have my goals taped to my desk, my vision board in my office and of course photos of my daughter Mila that makes me happy. 4. Stay Away From Burnout You can have it all and you can achieve your dreams but never through becoming an old fashioned workaholic. To have it all, you cannot do it all. That’s why on this blog we talk a lot about investing in yourself, building your team, learning to delegate and allowing yourself to be in your zone of genius. You can work less and grow more, make more and have more impact, you just have to do it in a certain way. We are taught as women to give so much and take care of everyone else. Many of us struggle to give ourselves permission to spend money on ourselves or take time for ourselves. It’s time to ask for more of what you want. We as women should feel confident demanding the best for themselves. The more we take care of ourselves, the more we can take care of our clients, family, friends, parents, etc. Heres a little exercise for you. List 3 desires you have for your work-life (assistant, beautiful office, more focus time, vacation, and location independent). List the costs for each of these desires. List 3 actions you can take today to get you closer to your desires.  What are your non-negotiables that you need for you self-care? List what you need now and what you want to work towards. 5. Take Back Control Of Your Inbox “E-mail is the largest single interruption in modern life. In a digital world, creating time, therefore hinges on minimizing e-mail.” â€"Timothy Ferris, author of The Four Hour Work Week Here are the goals you should try to reach for your inbox. We arent perfect and this will take some time but this is something you want to be working towards. Having control of your inbox and setting email boundaries will improve your work-life. I am writing this post to you at 9:41am and I have still not checked my email today. That is why I am able to devote my creative juices to writing this blog post and many others because I dont have my email draining me. Delete: Set a timer and get as many emails out of your inbox as quickly as possible. Either sort or delete. The feeling of an inbox with only 5-10 emails before you leave for the night is HEAVEN!  That way when you come in the next morning your inbox will be organized and you won’t be so stressed with the millions of things you think you have to do, but don’t really have to. Your inbox can seriously stress you out even though most of the emails are just informational and nothing that you actually have to do yourself. Batch: Batching is when you complete similar tasks at one time. So although I monitor my inbox for urgent emails throughout the day, I only answer emails for about one hour each day. That way I am focused and I get it done a lot faster. I try to batch other items like writing and social media as well so I can get more done with my time. Unsubscribe: Every second you waste scanning and deleting an email that you don’t want in your inbox in the first place is a complete waste of time. Go through your deleted files and start unsubscribing from newsletters and emails that you didn’t want and deleted. I spend 15 minutes every month unsubscribing to a lot of emails at once. When you do this, your inbox will not grow as fast and you won’t wake up to a ton of emails you didn’t want in the first place. Check out https://unroll.me. Try your best to get to inbox zero every day. Don’t check email until 10am. Don’t let it run your day. Focus on your revenue generating activities instead. [Related Post: The Top 10 Processes To Organize Your Work and Life] 5. Go Paperless Going digital is amazing. I use Evernote and Dropbox to manage all of my files. I don’t print anything and prefer to keep all of my to-do lists online. If I have to write down my daily to-do list, I write it on my dry-erase board.  I am actually getting rid of all of my books too and just going to be reading on my kindle. It’s amazing how great it feels to get rid of all the papers you really don’t need that just make you feel overwhelmed, stressed and disorganized. Happy uncluttering! Let me know how it goes!

How Effective is Networking for Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How Effective is Networking for Job Search - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career This is a question asked at all university lectures I give and is a valid one. Though, in reality how much does networking work for recent college graduates? Contrary to popular belief it is NOT as highly effective a tool when compared to other avenues, such as applying directly to hiring companies or recruiters whether it be through LinkedIn LNKD +1.53%, Monster.com or even taking the time to increase one’s GPA or internship experience. The Basic Networking Principle for Recent Graduates and Young Professionals It’s not about who you know. It’s about who knows you and what you can do for them â€" At a young age, as a recent college graduate you are yet to make a name for yourself, therefore when you engage someone to “network,” you must have a purpose as to how you can meet their needs. This is the first hurdle. Networking is a hierarchy. Since everyone is trying to reach their own goals, individuals will actively seek out others who can help them achieve their desired results and everyone else will take a backseat (in most circumstances). Think about this: when you look at a picture of your family or a group of friends, who do you see first? The answer is that we typically look at ourselves because that is who we are most concerned with. Maybe it’s a human flaw, but it’s the way people think and you can leverage this knowledge to be successful at networking. Therefore, to gain traction you first must understand the goals of the person you’re approaching and how you can help them achieve what they are seeking to accomplish. Start by visualizing what you would like if you were that individual. For instance: If you’re networking with an entrepreneur, that person wants someone who can bring fresh ideas and make the company money. If you’re networking with a HR rep, that person simply wants to fill a job with an employee who can perform the tasks required. If you’re networking with a sales manager, that person simply wants employees who are hunters and who can increase their territory sales. At a young age, you’re not always going to be able to deliver on what these individuals want…not yet anyway. Instead of getting discouraged, use the energy as a motivator to gain the necessary skills and eventually you will be of significant use to a lot of important decision makers. The Unwritten Rule of Networking The rule of thumb is that you can only contact a person one time (unless they are a personal contact / family contact) and that individual will typically put you off their radar if they don’t find you compelling (or your skills compelling enough)…instantaneously. Think one shot, one kill. Therefore, network when you’re ready and able to deliver results that individuals actively need. It’s okay to start small and work your way up. Rome was not built in a day nor will your network be. Then, when it’s time to network, do it correctly. Do your research on the individuals. Before contacting them, write down 5 goals you would want to achieve if you were that individual. Once you know someone’s motivators, you know how to effectively approach networking. In the End In reality, networking is best done when you make a name for yourself in an industry. The issue is that 100's of individuals are trying to network with the same people, but their approach often comes across as “I want a job from you,” rather than, “This is what I can do for you.” People who “want” don’t become successful. People who earn viable skills through hard work, passion and dedication are the ones that everyone bends over backwards to network with.

5 Ways to Procrastinate Effectively - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

5 Ways to Procrastinate Effectively - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog If you search for procrastination on google youll find a massive number of articles on how to stop procrastinating and get stuff done. These articles will tell you that there is only one reliable way for you to get stuff done: Check your todo-list for the next item Complete item no matter what it is Go to step 1 The message here is that if only you had enough willpower, backbone, self-control and discipline this is how you would work too. Well guess what: Many people dont work that way. Sometimes youre in the mood for a task and doing it is ridiculously easy and a lot of fun. Sometimes doing the very same task feels worse than walking barefoot over burning-hot, acid-covered, broken glass and forcing yourself to do it anyway is a frustrating exercise in futility. Sometimes procrastinating is exactly the right thing to do at a particular moment. Sadly, this is largely ignored by the procrastination-is-a-sign-of-weakness, the-devil-finds-work-for-idle-hands crowd. An example: Sometimes I have a great idea for an article, but I cant get it written. I try writing it one way, I try another but I just cant get it finished. Invariably, I end up procrastinating. Suddenly while Im procrastinating, the idea I was missing comes to me and the whole article is suddenly clear in my mind. When I next sit down to write it, it takes no time and writing it is a pure pleasure. I couldve forced myself to write that article the first time around if Id had enough discipline! But it would have been a struggle all the way and the result wouldnt have been half as good. I can just hear people crying Well, your articles still arent half as good :) Thats another discussion! For me, procrastination is just another tool I use. A way to recharge and get ideas. The important thing is to procrastinate effectively. Heres how you do it. 1: Procrastinate without guilt Do not beat yourself up for procrastinating. Everybody does it once in a while. It doesnt make you a lazy bastard or a bad person. If you leave a task for later, but spend all your time obsessing about the task youre not doing, it does nothing good for you. So procrastinate without guilt. 2: Procrastinate 100% Do you know those people who procrastinate from some important task and all they can talk or think about is the task theyre not doing. Often to the point of obsession! Dont. Throw yourself 100% into whatever it is you are doing, whether youre vacuuming, watching TV, reading, surfing the web or out drinking with your friends. Do it and enjoy it to the max. 3: Choose to procrastinate Dont let procrastination sneak up on you, so that you suddenly find that youre doing something other than you should be. Instead, choose consciously to not work on your current task. Instead of fighting it, say to yourself I will now procrastinate. This way procrastination isnt something that happens to you, something that youre powerless to control. As if it ever could be :) This way youre in charge and procrastination is a tool you use. 4: Ask yourself why you procrastinate There can be many good reasons to procrastinate: Some crucial ideas, notions, thoughts may come to you only when youre not working on your project. Effective procrastination recharges your batteries and gives you new energy. Maybe theres something else you could be doing instead and procrastinating means you get it done. Maybe whatever it is youre supposed to do, turns out to be irrelevant or even a bad idea. Maybe the reason you procrastinated was, that your subconscious knew this before your conscious mind. Or maybe and most importantly you just hate doing whatever it is youre supposed to do and thats why you cant make yourself do it. Many people hate their jobs (20% according to some studies) and constant procrastination can be a sign that youre one of them. In that case, take it seriously, and do something about it. Working non-stop means missing out on all of this. When you find yourself procrastinating, ask yourself why. Dont just accept the traditional answer: Theres something wrong with me, Im a bad, lazy person. 5: Take responsibility for procrastinating When you choose to procrastinate, make sure to update your deadlines and commitments. Let people know, that your project will not be finished on time and give them a new deadline. Procrastinate now. I dare you! Procrastination is not bad in itself. Do it right, and its a way to be more efficient and have more fun with what youre working on. In fact, I challenge you to procrastinate this very moment. Pick a task that you should be working on right now, but where your heart isnt really in it. Then, rather than work half-heartedly on this task, procrastinate fully and consciously as described above. Notice how it changes how you think about your task and what it does for you when you procrastinate 100% and without feelings of guilt. Then write a comment and tell me how it went. How Long Is a Resume?

How Long Is a Resume?Have you ever wondered how long is a resume? This can be a tricky question to answer because there are no set rules or regulations on how long the document should be. Each company has different guidelines when it comes to determining how long a resume should be. However, there are some general guidelines that can help you in determining how long your resume should be.When you ask this question, you may be wondering how long is a resume? The answer is that this varies depending on the industry that you are in. For example, if you are in the medical field, the medical field may be shorter than a food service employee.Even though your job title may be the same, there is still going to be a difference in how long your resume should be. If you are a secretary, it is not going to be very long, but if you are in management, then it will be a lot longer. Your resume needs to tell the employer what you do for a living and how long you have been in that position. You will a lso need to consider the length of your resume in relation to your current job. A person who is looking for a job that is two years in the future should have a much longer resume than someone who is applying now. Also, a person who is looking for a job at McDonald's does not need to be overly descriptive because he or she is not in a position where they need to be as detailed as a person who is looking for a corporate position in Detroit. These are just a few examples of what is needed to determine how long a resume should be.As stated earlier, there are no set rules for the length of a resume. The only real guideline is that the more information that is provided, the better. This is the same idea as a resume cover letter. When you are trying to figure out how long is a resume, you should look at the styles of resumes. There are a few formats that are used in different industries, and they differ from company to company. However, there are some basic trends that will hold true regard less of the resume that you use.The next question that you should ask yourself is how long is a resume? This may seem like a silly question to ask, but many people do not realize how long their resume should be. If you are someone who has a professional resume, you will want to have a longer one. Your resume may end up taking up half of your desk at work. The next time you ask yourself how long is a resume, you should consider all of the information that is out there. It is important to take the time to review every aspect of your resume before making a decision. In addition, it is important to remember that every resume is unique.
